When it comes to 1st class security, most people wouldn't think the pope deserves to have such tightly wound tough guys around him. Then you think back to Pope John Paul the 2nd's assassination attempt and you realize just how much popes need security.
And Pope Francis security team is the best of the lot! It boasts a heritage that spans 500 years and get this kicker; they do this job with spears!
But do not be fooled, these are actually an elite group of ex Swiss soldiers who can either tear you apart with their bare hands or with the high end spectrum military arms available to them!
The Pontifical Swiss Guard was founded officially on January 22nd, 1506 by Pope Julius II but at the time the Swiss Guard was really a mercenary force.
In the 14th century, Swiss fighters were knows to be some of the best anywhere, renowned for their ability to take on far larger armies and win. Their small footprint with big results was a precursor to today’s elite special forces teams.
They perform the following functions:
- to accompany the Holy Father on his travels
- to protect the College of Cardinals during papal transitions
- to guard the entrances to the Vatican City
- to perform other security and honorary services
This is how they look when they are with the pope:
