The Pope is around the corner and most Nairobians are uneasy with anticipation, perhaps with the hopes of setting an eye on him. He will be the second high profile visitor to land in the country, after Obama came in for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). Now, I'd love to highlight the top 5 most interesting Popes of all time.

1. Pope Benedict XVI

He is the most recent pope. He served from April 2005 until his hugely publicized resignation in 2013. No Pope has done that in our recent times. The Pope took over as the leader of the Catholic church after the death of Pope John Paul II.

2. St. Peter

He was the first head of the Catholic church. Originally, his name was Simon and was one of Jesus' 12 apostles. St. Peter did his ministry in Asia Minor before settling down in Rome. He stayed there for 25 years until his death. He was crucified by Augustus Caesar.

3. Pontian

He made history as the first Pope to resign. He headed the Catholic church from A.D. 230 to 253. He had voluntarily taken the role of heading the church so that there wouldn't be vacuum power. Later on, he was sentenced to hard labor at the Sardinian mineral mines by Emperor Maximus. This made him special, unlike the previous Popes who were sentenced to death.

4. Pope Formosus

He has to be one of the most interesting Popes of all times. His reign was from A.D. 891 to 896. During his time, there were a lot of political wars. Even prior to his reign, he had been excommunicated but later revived of his residency. After his death, he was exhumed, judged and declared unworthy of his Papal engagement. His remains were tossed into a river.

The last one is the most interesting!

5. Pope Benedict VI

He was elected after Pope Benedict V stepped down a few months after being elected. This is because the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, King Otto was opposing the election. Pope Benedict VI was later put to trial and imprisoned. This was after King Otto passed away in A.D. 974. The Pope was later put to death by the antipope successor.
