Tanui's life was cut short by Al-Shabaab militia group while he was trying to save Moi University students. Many Kenyans among them President Uhuru Kenyatta, DP William Ruto, National Assembly deputy speaker Joyce Laboso, Governor Isaac Rutto and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett described the fallen soldier as a hero and one who was ready to work to work for the nation.

"It is so sad that we have lost a young and brave officer who dedicated himself fully to protect the lives of Kenyans through such an act. It was his bravery and willingness that cost him his life and as the government we stand together during this grieving moment," read Uhuru's message that was read on his behalf by Joyce Laboso.
