Landlords are the biggest headache especially when its end month.

You know the thing where you're sure you've paid everything from rent to water bills but you just find yourself hiding from your landlord (most of them are men). Then hawa watu wanakuanga na aibu yani. All you want is respect and mutual understanding between both parties.

These are some landlords you will meet in our Kenyan settings:

The one whose wife is in charge.

Their wives are usually very noisy. So loud asking, kwa nini hakujafagiliwa leo? The wife is big headed, choosy, bossy and with an intolerable attitude. To survive her you must all play by the rules and not upset her because, at the end of the day, you need a roof.

The Fisi.

He’s been eyeing your clande wa Wednesday because she is the one with the longest weave and the perfectly curved eyebrows. Every other time your sisters visit, the landlord comes ringing the doorbell to ask if there is water yet he knows he pumped it in the morning.

The worst thing is, he is the one always filling in your neighbors on who came to your house, who left when and he gives a vivid description of any woman who walks in and out of your house.

The ghost.

He is too busy to get to the ground to handle stuff and the caretaker is always in charge. When you call him with a problem his response is always: 'wacha nikupigie'. All the years you live in his rental house you don’t get to know him: all you know is his account number and account name.

The rich folk.

He treats you like you are family. Every other time this landlord comes around he brings each tenant bananas and potatoes. He is so friendly and like a father to you all. But such types are a rare gem.

The money lover.

You don’t get to go a day or two without paying rent on time. His money is his life. He is hard to reason or negotiate with. You either foot your rent or he calls the cops and you get thrown out. Everyone makes sure that they have cleared their rent on time
