Two men have drowned in Naivasha in two different incidents as various rivers and dams in the town flooded due to the ongoing rains.

The two middle-aged victims died in a river and a dam respectively as the area disaster management committee issued an alert over flooding.

In the first incident, a swimming mission by a group of youths on the flooded River Malewa ended tragically after one of them was swept away by the gushing waters.

According to a witness Jane Wambui, a group of the youths were swimming on the river near Olmagogo area when the incident occurred.

She said that the water levels in the rivers that flows to Lake Naivasha had risen sharply in the last two weeks due to the ongoing rains.

“The youths were swimming from one end to the other and in the process, one of them was swept by the waters and his body is yet to be recovered,” she said.

Wambui added that efforts by his colleagues to rescue the youth were fruitless before police were informed about the incident.

And in the second incident, a 29-year-old man died after jumping into a flooded dam in Mununga village after a quarrel with his mother.

The man decided to take his life after the mother barred him from selling one of the cattle so that he could have the Two cash to spend over the festive season.

An elder in the village James Mwaniki said that the victim first engaged the mother in a heated argument before rushing to the flooded dam.

“Information coming from the mother is that the victim got angry after he was barred from selling the family’s only cow,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed both incidents adding that one body had been recovered while the search for the second one was going on.

“In the Malewa incident the body is yet to be recovered while in the dam one we have retrieved the body and taken it to the local mortuary,” he said.
