Kenyans Hate Dressing Up: Sauti Sol's Fashion Backlash

If Kenya was rated as the worst dressed country in Africa( or even the world), I wouldn't be surprised. When it comes to anything sartorial, Kenyans are a lazy, bland and insipid bunch that settles for copying each other and passing it off as fashion.

I mean look outside your window. You will probably see a horde of girls, strutting in their striped black and white skirts or American flag tights and bob box braids. You will see their male counterparts in American flag sweatpants and Wiz Khalifa sweatshirts and extremely loud snapbacks and shoes.

The problem with Kenyans is that they are too lazy to give any consideration to what they wear. I know a number of men who pick the first item they see and that is what they'll wear. Secondly, most Kenyans, especially the young generation, are all about fads, what is called 'SWAG' and not classic timeless pieces. Finally, a majority of Kenyans are still stuck in the precolonial era at least fashion-wise. They are afraid to push the envelope so when they see anyone who has tried something new in terms of fashion, they lash out at them. Men are usually on the receiving end of such criticism. A sharply dressed gentlemen is likely to be called gay. Such a pity!

Sauti Sol, for most yesterday and today, have been on the receiving end of criticism in regards to what they wore to the Coke Studio Africa recording. Kenyans went out of their way to comment on the band's Instagram page.

Sauti Sol are doing an admirable job in treading the road less travelled in fashion. And they are not alone. The Kenyan fashion scene is buzzing with a number of people who are stirring things up, like the ones below. I applaud you. And for you Kenyans who are still stuck in precolonial times, ditch those tacky sweatshirts and learn from such individuals. I mean, it's 2015!
