It all started at a friend’s birthday party sometime back. Ruth Gakii was happy to meet the man of her dreams. Little did she know that he would turn into a “monster”. Life was sweet; Ruth was treated like a queen by her then husband, Alphonse Kambu from Papua New Guinea. It is after she got pregnant, that Gakii say her husband, who works with the UN, changed drastically. According to her, he became violent and assaulted her on several occasions, even going to the extent of beating her in front of her parents.
On Sunday, the 26-year-old mother of one was beaten and left for dead by the man who accused her of neglecting their 3 and a half-year-old son.
We had a chance to interview Gakii from her hospital bed, and her story was disheartening. She narrated how her baby daddy had been mistreating her and even giving alcohol to their son. The woman, who runs a small business selling make up and women’s hand bags, says all she wants now is justice and full custody of her son.
