Gay men are making strides in some countries where the stigma and severe repercussions of more conservative dogma are not prevalent.
Even some Kenyan gays are finding a way to express themselves away from home. Take one Mpenzi Chokuu who lives in Cologne, Germany.
Chokuu was once a typical average guy who once felt he did not fit in and did not have the desire to follow trends. And he has tried to buck trends that he sees constrain him and who he is.
The flamboyant man has decided to showcase his lifestyle on social media. He exudes confidence and poise in a lifestyle choice that many Africans find hard to stomach.
But for Chokuu that does not fluster him as he keeps on sharing pics of his gym workouts. He also wears heels and dresses. He also shares thoughts and observation that he has.
Chokuu who has publicly acknowledged his love for men has to also fight many homophobic people who find his orientation uncomfortable and his confidence is working well to block the hate.
There are some women on Facebook who believe Chooku is a bitter gay. Why? Because he’s been abusing women on the social media platform especially those who criticize him.
Chokuu is not Kenya’s first openly gay cross-dresser.
Jackson ‘Jaffar’ Irungu was once the talk of the town when he posted some images of himself on social media.
Jackson declared that he had been living in the wrong body for as long as he could remember and finally decided to ‘open up to the world’.
The fashionista has since changed course and is now in a relationship with a woman. And yes he is a mushroom farmer. Life.
