Kenyan athletes have exposed the dilapidating conditions they had to put up with after the 2016 Olympic games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, came to an end.

In a series of tweets, Team Kenya captain Wesley Korir recounted how they were bundled and taken to a crime ridden slum after the Olympics village was closed on Tuesday.

Korir, who is also the MP for Cherangany, says they could not even sleep because of the loud sound of gunfire outside and the mosquitoes that were everywhere.

But that is just a tip of the iceberg.

Team Kenya was stranded in Rio for hours as National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) 'looked for cheaper flights'.

The dire situation forced athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge to purchase their own air tickets to Kenya, while the rest had to spend the night in the dingy rooms.

A photo doing rounds on social media shows the 'nasty' food that the athletes were served before they retired for the day.

“The best country in the world will spend their night in this ‘slum’ like area in Rio after the Olympic village was closed! Unbelievable mistreatment of athletes! ” Korir captioned the video below.

Kenyans On Twitter (KOT) have faulted the government for mistreating the athletes and expecting them to bring back medals.
