Kendi is on the comeback trail. The musician released a new song on Friday. The song called “Love Me” is a beautiful ballad that showcases the vocal prowess and range that is renowned for.
The artist came to our offices and spoke exclusively to Mpasho.co.ke. When asked about the song, she said:
I am switching back to my original sound.
The singer also spoke about her new management team called Belazzo entertainment and gave props to them. She praised the team for pushing a new model of doing music in the country.
A system that is based on patience and long-term planning. She said:
They will treat the artiste, whether you are a star or not, they will treat you like the star you are…They will give you the lifestyle that represents you as who they want you to be…They commit 100% to the people they work with.
How did her musical journey begin? She says that it started when she was a precocious young girl. While in boarding school, a friend of hers saw her interest in music and arranged a meeting for Kendi with her brother. Her friend’s brother worked with Calif Records and would arrange an introduction for her at the studios.
But Kendi had to find a way to go to Nairobi City all the way from Meru. Where would she get the finances from? She lied to her parents that she would be going to science congress and that she would need 2,500 shillings for the trip.
With cash in hand, she travelled to Nairobi City. When she arrived, she met Mike the brother of her high school friend and took her to his home. The next day he took her to meet Clemmo.
When Clemmo saw her he was shocked. Why? All Clemmo saw a tiny girl who was still in her school uniform. Clemmo asked her reason for being there? The response he was given was that she was there to sing.
The super-producer gave her an opportunity, telling her to sing for him. She sang one of her own compositions, a song she would later record with Jimwat.
She then went back to school and discovered that her parents had found out she had run away. She humourously explains that her father disowned her for 2 weeks only to later forgave her.
He then promised that he would support her dream to become a musician but only if she finished high school, which she did. Her father kept his word and paid for her first song which she did at Calif Records. How about that for following your dreams?
There will be more interesting nuggets about Kendi to come in later articles.
