Giant killers Kabras Sugar are expected in Nairobi tomorrow in the morning ahead of Saturday’s Kenya Cup final match against KCB. The match will be played at KRFUEA grounds starting from 4pm.

The Western based club defied all the odds as they secured a 15-12 win over defending champions Nakuru in last weekend’s semi finals played at Nakuru Athletics Club. Kabras were playing in the Kenya Cup for the first time this season and lived behold expectations after series of brilliant displays.

The team will travel tonight and is expected to hold training tomorrow in the evening and on Friday as seek they to cause yet another upset in this season’s Kenya Cup. Speaking to Mpasho, Chairman Roy Olendo says they will be going for the title when they take on the tellers.

“There is a lot of excitement in the camp, they want to win the title, the first time we played KCB, we had not even put out acts together, now we have put our act together and there is some believe we can win the title”

“We had lost to Nakuru in our first match, we did not lose because we were second to them but we just made some mistakes which we corrected, we knew our defence was good but kicking let us down, when we went to Nakuru we played as a unit and avoided some mistakes” He said.

Head coach Antony Ogot who also doubles up as a player is expected to maintain the same sqaud that started in Nakuru with both sides set to name their teams on Friday. Ogot says the win against Nakuru has motivated his players ahead of the final.

Kabras is one of the emerging clubs from Western region and Olendo says their focus is to dominate the Rugby scene in the country. Olendo has praised the team’s depth which also saw his side reach Erich Shirley Shield semi final.

“Somebody cannot say we are a one season wonders yet we have two strong teams, we have more than seventy players fighting for a place in the Enterprise cup, it shows we have enough talent ahead of next season"

Olendo says they will seek to rebuild a strong team come next season as they look to maintain their good run in the Kenya cup. The club has also plans to rest several senior players in the Enterprise cup and give chance to new blood.

“Some senior players might take a rest, but we are still going to be competitive, at the moment we are having an influx of new players who are experienced and willing to play for us, this week alone we’ve had five players who have played for the national team willing to join us” Said Olendo.

Western region has a huge talent in terms of Rugby and Kabras will continue to recruit young and upcoming players from Western schools. Kabras has partnered with some of the schools and they have been involved in a number of activities including Rugby clinics in some of these schools.

“If you look at our team, is an average of 20-24 years, most of them players are actually guys from high school, one of the core things that we are doing is partnering with high schools and selecting their best players” He said.

“When we take these coaching clinics to schools, we already tell them our game plan, so when they come to join us, they quickly fit into our systems. This makes us select the best players from the region” Olendo said.

Meanwhile all is set for the Saturday’s final which will see four matches played. The first match will see Impala II take on KCB II in the Eric Shirley Cup final before paving way for the Nationwide Final between Bungoma Sharks and Thika RFC.
