“Maji imerudi?” – Popular urban phrase in Kenya.

Imagine not having to worry about your water supply. Imagine not having to be worried about power rationing because the water levels in the dams were at their lowest. Imagine not complaining to your local mama mboga that tomato prices are too high. Imagine not having to buy extra containers for water storage... Imagine not having to go for a swim because you want to save shower water (Okay, we are lying).

Forests are an important part of our ecosystem. In fact, if you have been paying attention to your surroundings, you will realize that some of the problems stated above were non-existent years ago. Most of them can be traced to the destruction of the main forest complex in Kenya, The Mau.

What should we know about the Mau? ...and forest cover in Kenya?

1. The internationally recommended forest cover for states is 10% of the total land surface. Kenya currently has less than 3%. It is estimated that 100 years ago, Kenya's forest cover stood at 14%. (Where has a whooping 11% gone to?)

2. The destruction of forests in Kenya is a widespread phenomenon. These forests include the Mount Kenya Forest, the Aberdare Forest, the Kaya Bombo Forest at the Coast, the Kakamega Forest, the Mangroove Forest and the Mau Forest Complex
