If You Are Raped In Campus, You Are On Your Own.

If you are raped in campus today, chances are nothing will be done. You will have to deal with the situation yourself. I set out to ask campus students from Multimedia University and Catholic University of East Africa if they knew about any provisions on rape in their campuses and the answers were quite shocking.

Every weekend, there are a horde of events and parties being held, in campus or in the neighboring clubs. Chances are that, at one out of every five parties, someone is drugged and raped. Aside from parties, within the campus it is very possible for one to get raped without the knowledge of anyone but the offender and the victim. That being said, I asked if students were aware of any existing provisions on rape in their school and these are the answers I got.

"There are none in our school. So many girls have been raped and nothing has been done. If I was raped today, I don't know who I'd tell. I'd just keep it to myself"

"Sexual harassment is real. Sometimes even by lecturers. But who do you tell? Who will even believe you?"

"There are no provisions of rape in our school. Though sometime ago a guy tried to rape a girl and he was beat up by the students. We have counselors but to be honest, I don't know what they do."

"I am in my fourth year and in all these years, I have never heard the school address any issues on rape or sexual harassment. For real. I will probably leave school without them addressing it. "

Rape is a complex subject. Most people wrongly believe that rape is something you let happen to you and not something that happens to you. Because of this, most victims are afraid to come out and report the incident. In campuses that make no provisions for rape, what do you do if you are raped?

There are a number of rape hotlines that are available where you can be taken care of. Some examples include :

  • CradleMobile : 0722 201 875, 0734 798 199,
  • Family Health OptionsNairobi Youth Centre, EastleighTelephone: 020- 342323
  • Federation of Women Lawyers-Kenya (FIDA-K)Fida offers legal services to women.Telephone: +254203870444, +254203873511
  • Mobile: 0722 509760, 0733 845003

You should then visit the hospital immediately. This is very crucial so you can be protected against contracting STIs or getting pregnant. There is usually a police officer stationed at the hospital who you can report the incident to.

While it is important for individuals to look out for themselves, it is equally important for the university to make sure that there are ways for such issues to be addressed. In the event of rape, the victim's life has been jarred. They are in shock and the last thing on their mind is reporting the incident. This way, most of these offenders get away scot free. As long as there are no proper measures in Universities regarding rape, such offenders will continue to thrive in an environment that enables their heinous acts.

Are there any such provisions in your campus?
