Mama Kayai from popular show Vitimbi show is one of the best actors the country has ever produced.
The 63-year-old Mama Kayai was among the clique of actors back in the 1990s, who left us in stitches whenever they graced the screen. From Vitimbi to Vioja Mahakami, they brightened our faces and we miss them.
Mama Kayai was a guest on Jalang’os show on Wednesday, where she talked about her career, family among other things.
The mother of four revealed that back then they were paid poorly.
‘I used to earn Ksh40 back then,’ she said.
Her parents had no idea that she was working as an actress and she would be beaten whenever she took money home.
‘my mum would ask me where I got the money when I take it home and she would beat me because I used to hide when going on set. Later I explained to them what I used to do and they understood that I had a job. nilikuwa naona ikiwa mingi. I would give Ksh35 to my mother and spend the rest [Ksh5] on myself na maisha inaendelea,’ she recalled.
Comparing actors of her days and the current ones, Mama Kayai said,
Nowadays actors are paid handsomely but the problem is they misuse it. They don’t know how to use it. They spend money on alcohol and other things which don’t add value to their lives.
A lot of her fellow actors the pioneers of Vitimbi and Vioja Mahakamani have died and she is among the few who are alive and she is thankful for life.
‘Without God, I wouldn’t be where I am today,’ she said.
The actress together with Vioja Mahakamani prosecutor Gibson Mbugua and the late Mzee Ojwang bought lands next to each other in Kasarani area, where they built their homes.
