This world is full of damning surprises. Kenya has experienced cases of parents accused of punishing their young ones by burning them - for petty mistakes. In Mumias, a standard one girl was severely burnt by her dad for eating food reserved for her younger brother. The disturbing act was done by Bernard Wambutsi, a fish monger at Shianda market.

A few minutes before he did the heinous act, the girl's mom had slightly pinched her in an attempt to scold her for what she had just done. However, the dad went ahead to tie rubber on the poor girl's hands and after pouring oil on them, she set her ablaze.

“The three children ate their share and I preserved some for my youngest son who was a sleep. But this girl went ahead and ate her brother’s food. I lightly pinched her but her father went ahead and set her hands a blaze” said Mercy Auma, wife to the now criminal husband.

To make matters worse, the two did not take the child to hospital and she was only admitted to hospital five days later.

“She suffered 5 degree burns on her left hand and contracted a severe infection on the burned wounds which had not been taken care of for five days since she was burned” said Willis Ochieng, a doctor at the hospital where the girl is admitted. The medics have administered proper treatment to her and say that she's out of danger.

“We are maintaining daily cleaning of the wounds and offering her physiotherapy. She is taking painkillers and relies on a heavy duty cream to stop her blisters and burns from getting worse,” said the doctor.
