How did Kenyans survive before the internet?

The internet is a wonderful thing. It has made our lives so much easier in many aspects. In fact, there are many ways we don’t really appreciate how much easier life really is at the moment. Let us explore some of the ways Kenya was before the Internet

  1. You literally lost some friends for life and could only catch up by chance. Before the internet, you really did lose contact with friends and acquaintances. You literally had no way of catching up with them if you had been apart for years. Now, thanks to Facebook, Instagram and other platforms an old friend is literally a search away and within seconds you are in contact.
  2. To shoot a video, you had to have a camera and access to a studio where professionals would edit your clips. Now, thanks to the internet and smartphones, you can literally make your own movies and clips that will be seen by the world.
  3. Education. In the past, only few had great knowledge. In fact, knowledge was hard to come by. You had to go to a library or physical bookstore to access knowledge. Heck, you had to attend classes to get an education. Thanks to the internet, you can now learn from the comfort of your home. There is an abundance of information to choose from. There is online learning and you can purchase all the books you want in digital form, something that your parents may be skeptical about.
  4. Maps and navigation. Remember when explorers had to carry a map and compass as they traveled for navigation purposes? Or when you had to use your mental energy to remember specific routes? Or when travelers used to ask, “Where is this place?”
  5. Video calling. Video calls were a reserve for rich villains in movies. Now, even a street boy can make a video call and comment on your terribly done eyebrows.
  6. Hand written letters. When is the last time someone wrote you a letter and you had it stamped then delivered through mail? Now its just check e-mail, check inbox. Do high school kids still write letters to their crushes by the way?
  7. You had to actually wait to read the newspapers to know what was happening. Information traveled through a linear path and was susceptible to a lot of bias. Right now, the average person has more access to news than former presidents did during the 90's. Remember when you had to read the papers to figure out what happened yesterday?
  8. Falling in love. Courtship was different in the pre-internet days. The work was much harder and your choices were limited. Now you can be much more selective without investing much time going on dates asking questions like “What type of food do you like?” The internet has made this easier through dating sites and social media profiles. You can literally access the catalog of a potential mates life. It's all there on the internet.
  9. Entertainment and music. Back then, before we listened to new music there was a lead time. You had to wait for a magazine review, your favorite radio station then your music store to stock the cassettes or CD. You literally had to go to the cinemas to watch a new movie. Thanks to the internet, you can download music and movies as soon as they are releases.
  10. TV and Radio. It’s a fact that Kenyans listened to radio and watched TV from major cable companies much more than we currently do. In fact, you watched the weather forecast religiously to know what you were going to wear back then. You were personally invested in the lives of newscasters and radio hosts because they were the only people who could entertain you. Right now its not odd to have a whole week without watching TV and listening to radio because you have a choice to filter through what you watch and listen to commercial free.
  11. Tusker Lager. From time immemorial, Tusker Lager has been the go-to Kenyan beer. This quality beer has brought people together for over 90 years and continues to inspire Kenyans of all ages and backgrounds to come together to achieve exciting new possibilities.Remember the old ads we saw and heard? ...yes, those ones with the catch melody. Nostalgia much! We would instinctively arrange with friends and family to enjoy Tusker and Nyama Choma at gatherings. No one had to be told that these two were a match. Gladly, this hasn't changed. The only thing is that we now have WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, GoogleMaps and all these other platforms to help us make meetings easier. You can even order Tusker online on www.jumia.com or www.masoko.com. Definitely worth the while, right?
