Mike Wachira

Radio presenter Mike Wachira has moved to Smooth FM. This is after working for HomeBoyz radio for 13 years.

Mike started his radio career in November 2007. Speaking exclusively to Mpasho.co.ke, Wachira said the events that followed after the launch of the radio station were very vivid in his mind.

“Soon after that, there was the post-election violence and so we got a pay cut. Businesses were failing but we had so much commitment in what we were doing. This was a dream that had come true for me.”

Wachira reminisces about the good times he spent with his former co-hosts.

“I have co-hosted the show with amazing presenters from Jeff Mote to Sheila Kwamboka, Kerry Martin, Lotan and Sanaipei. We’ve always felt like a family”

He has already started hosting his new show ‘Smooth Breakfast with Mike Wachira’ on Smooth 105.5 FM.

“I am now doing a breakfast show at Smooth FM and I feel really blessed to be given that opportunity. Moving from a drive show to a breakfast show is not easy especially if you look at who is in the line up on the breakfast club at that time. We are talking about Maina Kageni, Mwalimu King’ang’i, G-Money and all these people who are really great. It is exciting and challenging.”

Asked why we should listen in to him, the legendary radio personality said;

I love the station, smooth music, it is a good place to be if you love your music from the 80s and the 90s. Waking up with people is such a good thing and I’m proud to be part of that journey.

I am the best way to wake up in the morning. If you are the kind of person who likes to wake up in a nice and easy relaxing way without the noise, the world can be very noisy and you want to get into the mood that makes you smile as you get to work, this is the station to listen to.

Wachira’s biggest lesson in the industry is to not take anyone for granted.

“Be respectful and appreciate that you can learn something from everybody. 13 years into the game I’m still learning. If you come with humility and a spirit to learn, you will grow.”

He says even with social media, radio is here to stay;

“Radio is here to stay. It is a medium that so many rely on and trust. You can get information on social media but the trust people have built with radio shows you that radio is still a medium that is here to stay for a very long time.”

The Raverend! Shaffie Weru confirms his return to radio

Wachira is also one of the most sought after radio presenters who is now under The Radio Africa Group.
