HISTORY IS MADE! Kenya Wins The Singapore Leg Of World Sevens Tourney!

It's an epic moment for Kenya this afternoon, following the triumphant win of the Kenya Sevens team, Shujaa, after beating powerhouses Fiji 30-7 to win the HSBC Singapore leg. After 114 tournaments played across 17 years when Kenya were selected to the world series, they delivered on the big stage and sent the country into a celebratory mood.

President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated the team for the heroic performance and said he will receive the team when thy arrive tomorrow evening. It was the third time lucky for Kenya in the final after losing 26-7 to South Africa in Adelaide in 2009 and losing to England 24-19 in extra time in Wellington in 2013.

Kenya started the match strongly from the kickoff ands scored the opening try in the first minute when Oscar Ayodi picked the ball from a ruck and showed the Fijian defence a clean pair of heels to touch down Samuel Oliech missed the conversion for a 5-0 lead . Kenya were on attack yet again putting the Fijians under enormous pressure with their swarming defence and the Fijians were coughing up possession . From one such move vice captain Collins Injera beat two Fijian defenders to land at the corner for an unconverted try and a 10 -0 lead.

Shujaa were on the ascendancy and Fiji looks stunned with skipper Andrew Amonde and fellow forwards Humphrey Kayange and Willy Ambaka leading from the front pinning Fiji in their own 22 . Injera was on the mark yet again receiving flat pass from Augustine Lugonzo to touch down with Oliech missing the conversion for a 15-0.

Fiji rallied but Kenya defended gallantly shutting down the Pacific Islanders. Kenya controlled possession and Amonde beat two defenders and offloaded th ball to Oliech at the corner for an unconverted try and a half time score of 2-0 in favour of Kenya.

On resumption Fiji came out firing on all cylinders and began to dominate possession with Kenya tiring one sweeping move by the Fijians saw Jerry Tuwai touched down with Vatemo Ravouvou adding the conversion to reduce the margin to 20-7. The Fijian grew in confidence and almost scored a second try but a valiant tackle by Willy Ambaka on Ravouvou prevented him from scoring.

Kenya went on the attack again and substitute Frank Wanyama burst through a couple of tackle to score an an unconverted try and Nelson Oyoo put the icing on th cane with a brilliant run to give Shujaa its maiden title on the world stage.
