According to the survivor, the boy told his counterparts that they were being called to the staffroom by their teachers.

But before they left, he went to a higher floor and told them that he had seen a ghost that 'wanted to suck pupils' blood.'

The pupils were terrified and started running helter-skelter to shield themselves from the alleged ghost.

Two boys were fighting in class, then another pupil came to our stream and told us that we were being called by our teachers to the staffroom.

Hatukuwa tumeenda mbali akapanda juu akaanza kushout akisema ghost inataka kunyonya damu. Akasema ameona mtu ameavaa pembe, amejipaka uso na ako na nguo ya white, red na black anataka kunyonya watu damu. [We hadn't gone far when he went back to a higher floor and said he had seen a ghost that wanted to suck our blood. H said: ‘I am seeing someone who has horns and is wearing red, white and black clothes. He is saying he wants to suck our blood]' she said.

The young girl explained,

..so ndio boys wakajipanga kwa stairs wakipita wanategana wakilaliana. [The pupils immediately ran to the staircases, with the male children leading. Many girls tripped over the boys' legs and fell. Other pupils — while still frantic, trampled on the ones who were on the ground, resulting in the victims suffocating and dying].

I was pushed to the ground while attempting to run for safety. I fell on the staircases and rolled down. I sustained minor injuries. Sadly, my friend died during the stampede,' she said.

I won’t blame teachers for the pupils' death. they were in the staffroom when the incident happened.
