Members of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Ngecha, Limuru, Kiambu County are calling on the government to enhance security after a 500kg copper church bell was stolen last week.

Speaking to journalists Wednesday the Virgin Mary Orthodox church organizing secretary Mr. James Warari said robbers broke into their church on Thursday night last week after curfew hours and stole the copper church bell and fled.

“We were informed that there had been an incident at the church and when we got there, we confirmed that indeed, thieves had broken down the doors at the church and stolen the church bell,” said Warari.

The church Faithful at Ngecha have now urged the administration police to take action to bring the perpetrators to justice, they have also urged the government to provide security for churches following the ban on religious gatherings in the counties of Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado and Nakuru

Warari raised concerns that the robbers are now taking advantage of the curfew and ban on church gatherings to steal from Houses of God.

He further said that high levels of unemployment on the youth in the area might be the course for the insecurity as it is only last month that a gang broke in to the church and stole 10 altar wines among other church valuables

“This is not the first time the thieves are targeting our church; the youth should look for other avenues to make money, not crime,” Warari added.

Both incidents have been reported at Ngecha police station where they are investigating the matter.
