A widow in Lamu has narrated the harrowing experience in which her husband was massacred by suspected al Shabaab fighters at Bobo Village in Hindi, Lamu West.

Ruth Irungu, the widow of Gerald Wanjahi, said a heavily armed gang of about 30 people struck at 1.30 am on Wednesday.

She said the militants were only interested in her husband.

"They wore military regalia and had AK-47 rifles and machetes. They knocked several times on the door and ordered us to come out of their house but we did not," she said.

The killers then forced their way into the house and dragged her husband out of their bedroom.

"I escaped as they approached the bedroom since they were only interested in my husband. I hid in the roof but could hear everything. My husband screamed and then silence followed. That’s when I knew they had slaughtered him," she said.

Irungu said the attackers left immediately.

"When I went back, there was blood everywhere and my husband’s body was covered with clothes and boxes."

"I went out of the house and screamed for help. It was around 2 am by then. No one came until around 5 am. One by one they came to see what had happened," she said.

"I can’t comprehend how in a few hours I was sleeping next to my husband but this morning he is no longer breathing. I can’t even find words to explain how my husband was killed."

Irungu said the 50-year-old man was the family's sole breadwinner.

"I am worried. I will face difficulties explaining this to my young child."

About 50m from her home, another family mourned the killing of Samuel Nguchu, a father of six, by the same gunmen.
