Happening Right Now: War In Burundi As President Nkurunziza Tries To Regain Control Of The Country

The President who tried to re-enter Burundi following an attempted coup yesterday returned to Tanzania. He had been discussing with fellow leaders his intention to vie for another Presidential season despite having been in the seat for two terms already.

This sparked anger from various political groups which seem dissatisfied with his leadership. Private radio stations in the country have been switched off and earlier today, there was reported gun shot and intense fighting near the state-run national broadcaster RNTB in the capital, Bujumbura.

The country's national airport had been closed and flights grounded. However, it was reopened earlier today. The airport staff were taken from the airport on boarded buses as soldiers took over. The ongoing fight is between Nkurunziza's supporters and the rebel soldiers led by former Intelligence Chief Major General Godefroid Niyombare.
