But some friendships aren’t meant to last and theirs died with accusations thrown back and forth that would be fit for a telenovela.

We won’t get into the accusations, but since then, the two used their respective social media pages to attack each other. Floyds’s Instagram account has 22.8 million followers at last count, while 50 Cent’s has 22 million.

The two use the platforms to attack each other, none following the phrase, “being the bigger man” For some time it appeared that there had been a cessation of hostilities between the two a war has again erupted again between the two.

But that was just the beginning. Why? Gucci added more fuel to the fire with a blunder that even a high school student would blush at.

The haute couture brand released a line of products that evoked memories of America’s racist past. They produced a black wool balaclava sweater with an oversized collar that pulls over the chin and nose. It includes a slit where the mouth is, ringed with what look like giant red lips.

This giant red lips and slit where the mouth is, evoke memories of how people of colour were depicted in the early 20th century.

The demeaning caricature was supposed to draw a comparison between people of African heritage and primates. Such images had been left behind in the pages of history, until Gucci.

The backlash was instantaneous with many black entertainers calling for a boycott of the clothing brand. 50 Cent, himself burnt his own Gucci merchandise. But Floyd refused to toe the line and said that he would keep buying Gucci.

An unpopular opinion that has seen 50 Cent go hard at him with more memes targeting the former(?) boxer.

Floyd released a statement on his Instagram page calling all his detractors, hypocrites. This war between the two will not end anytime soon as both men embody the well-worn trope:

An unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.
