The God Mother! Nyeri granny charged with peddling bhang

An-83-old granny was today arraigned before a Nyeri court charged with peddling bhang.

The accused, Lydia Mumbi admitted to the charge before Senior Resident Magistrate Nelly Kariuki after she was nabbed with 600 grams of cannabis sativa on July 10 at Muthinga area in Tetu Sub-county as she alighted from a matatu from Nyeri Town.

According to the prosecution, the accused was a known peddler who has been on the police radar for some time.

The court heard that at the time of the arrest, the suspect who passes herself as a ripe banana fruit vendor had concealed the narcotics in dry banana leaves in a woven sisal basket.

The granny is said to be in the business with her son to whom she makes deliveries for sale to locals.

The court ordered the suspect to be held in police custody until Monday, July 15, when a determination will be made on whether to charge her with the offense of being in possession of or trafficking bhang.
