They grace our screens everyday. They bring laughter, joy and smiles to our faces whenever we are gloomy. For sure Kenyan comedians are the best. As the days come and go, the Kenyan comedy industry continues to grow with talents mushrooming from every corner of the country.
In Kenya, we have well-known comedians such as Churchill, also known as the father of Kenyan comedy, Nyambane from the Redykyulass crew, Eric Omondi amongst others who set the pace for the young ones. Despite being known for their witty characters, there are some things Kenyans don't know about their comedians.
Well, with the help of my colleagues, I came up with the five things you didn't know about Kenyan comedians.
1. Most of them have come from humble backgrounds
Ever asked yourself why we don't have punk comedians in Kenya? Well, unlike other parts of the world where comedians come from wealthy families, in Kenya, most of them come from humble backgrounds. But something funny is that they forget about where they came from after money and fame.
2. They invest so much in their hairstyles
If you want to spot a Kenyan comedian in a crowd, just check their hairstyles. They always have funny hairstyles and from the look of things, most of them invest a lot on their hair so as to look "different" from the rest but in most cases, they end up looking like rainbows or billboards.
3. They Love attention
They are always pulling publicity stunts so as to keep us talking. Some of them do not even own a bicycle, but they always end up posting photos posing in high-end places and next to heavy machines. When they are in a public place, they will make sure their presence is felt or recognized. "Hallaing" at Djs and MCs for shout outs. Some will even cause drama and even fight.
4. They are ratchets
This is where most of them belong. From clubs to public functions, they are always ratchet. Some of them drink themselves silly and misbehave at events hence causing a stir. Most of them never miss out on controversy lists.
5. They love women
Although many believe that Kenyan footballers love women more than their careers, that's not the case. Wait till you are friends with a local comedian. Most of them love women such that if you happen to meet them in a public place such as a club or an event, all you will see are women surrounding them. That's why some of them are well known deadbeat dads. They also love dating cougars because of money; they are paid peanuts and that's why they prefer "sponsors" to young women.
