I came across something yesterday that peaked my interest. It was a post on a site called Kenyan List which aside from all the garbage it has to offer, occasionally offers something useful. It is a site that allows Kenyans to be ratchet while giving them anonymity so it attracts all kinds of cretins, cockroaches and lizards but it also attracts some of Kenya's brightest minds. Something like a local version of Reddit.

The post is about a Kenyan reggae DJ called Rankin Achok. While I am not familiar with ratchet DJs spinning records for their oboho clientele, his fans and those who remember him from respectable clubs such as Hollywood, Nyanza, Monte Carlo and Achievers have gathered in his memory to talk some smack and throw shade.

This was the allegation:

HE was shot dead a few years ago. I personally used to know this Dj coz used to go to the club he mixed reggae. I will not mention the Dj's name ,bt here is a short biography. he started Djaying with the likes of Papa Chally and King Tabbz at King Lion sounds.He later broke ranks with the two King Lion bros and decided to do Solo. his initials Were DJ. R.A

HOW DID HE JOIN CRIME

Those days Reggae Djs used to be paid peanuts smthing like 1K per night and they were on duty only on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday (Ladies night). Those days Reggae Djs used to depend on handouts from revellers or selling of reggae mix tapes mixed by them.

Enter Waizi wa mchuma who after a successful robbery go to reggae clubs and make it rain by spending heftily. In reggae clubs when one buys more than 4 beers he is immediately spotted and details about u and yr crew will be known in a sec. So when these young waizi wnet into reggae clubs fully loaded and buying booze like a nonsense word will spread ati akina Kinga wanaka wameangukia leo? This info will always reach the Dj booth and most times since Djs depended on revellers especially the likes of KINGA would get on the Mic , play a song and shout out..THIS IS DEDICATED TO A MAN NAMED KINGA OUTTA UMOJA RENEGADES BIG UP

kINGA who is alredy on spend thrift mode will move to the Dj box and hand over DJ R.A 10K or more depending on the loot they got.

Now DJ R.A tama ikamshika he asked the guys of they can ingiza him kwa foam. One thing u should know is that these waizi worship these reggae Djs (Dont ask me why)

So DJ R.A was put into the mix. They used to carjack guys at night and zunguka with the victim the whole night while withdrawing cash from ATM.

He went on with his activities and we started noticing a difference, DJ. R.A soon started Driving, he started buying expensive shoes , his life changed kabisa.

Kidogo one night while we were having fun in the reggae club news starts streaming in ati Dj. R.A amewekwa kichungi. Meaning he was sprayed by bullets by cops. this it when it dawned on us........

The responses flooded in fast and furiously. It would seem from the comments that this was actually common knowledge to everyone who plies their trade as a makanga. Why am I not shocked?
