Women have been sharing their very candid experiences of period pain - after a doctor described how menstrual cramps can feel nearly 'as bad as a heart attack'.

Social media users have been using various analogies to describe how their period cramps feel - with one woman declaring that she'd suffered pain 'far worse than a heart attack' and another saying it felt like being 'hit with a truck'.

Many added they were pleased that the pain experienced by women on their periods was finally being taken seriously.

It comes after Professor John Guillebaud, from the Univerity College of , said patients have described cramps as being 'almost as bad as having a heart attack.'

Responding to the comment, one woman wrote: 'I've had period cramps FAR worse than a heart attack. Though, wouldn't recommend either'.

Another added:

'No one.... I mean NO ONE knows this struggle like I do. Period cramps aren't quite like a heart attack, but more along the lines of putting your uterus/ pelvic muscles through a paper shredder every month'.

Meanwhile, one woman explained: '[M]ine feels llike there's a tiny creature trying to claw around to escape my uterus, but upon realising its failure, starts eating its way out and rearranging my insides.'

However, some people said they thought the heart attack analogy was taking it too far.

One commented: 'Period pains are annoying and painful, but has nothing on kidney stones or labor. Now “doctors” are saying it’s worse than a heart attack? Not sure I comprehend.'

Another added: 'No one died from period cramps whereas a heart attack ......'

The reaction comes after a quote from Professor Guillebaud recently resurfaced thanks to an article by .

He had previously revealed how patients have described craps as being 'almost as bad as having a heart attack.'
