One would never think that Wikipedia would crash…but it happened and the world noticed. This was on June 25, 2009 at 3.15 PM when it was announced that Michael Jackson had passed away.
The other time when the website shut down was in January 2012, when it went down for 24 hours. This was in protest for internet anti-piracy laws in the United States, which would affect many websites. Among other websites which joined in the protest include Reddit and the Italian version of the online resource site.
The co-founder, Jimmy Wales made told his Twitter followers that they should protest in support of his move. Instead of accessing the millions of articles on the site, the users were treated to an open letter encouraging them to protest to congress.
