Legendary Kenyan track and field athlete Kipchoge Keino has shared memories of his youthful days as an athlete.

During the superbrands East Africa Award, the 1500 metres gold medalist recalled his old days when he represented Kenya as an athlete and captain.

"I shaked hands with Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and he told me to go and do my best. I was the captain of the Kenyan team," Kipchoge shared.

After the blessings of the retired President, a doctor advised Kipchoge not to participate in the race.

However, he went on with his planned race and won a Gold Medal.

"I went to the bus and then realised I was late...and that was my warm-up. I was behind in the first lap, second lap I moved in third lap I took over and finished 20 metres ahead of everyone. I was proud of what I did for my country," he added.

At the event, Kipchoge was crowned as the Superbrands Personality of the year.

He urged brands to come together and support sports in the country.

“Let us work and improve sports in this country. Sports unite the youths of this country and the world and I’m sure we have a lot of talents in this country. Let us prepare and build facilities in various schools to support our youth. We can do it if we’re united and build facilities for our youths,” he said.
