• Maina dismissed the notion that touring places around Kenya requires one to have a lot of money.
• "If you want a plane dashboard I can get you. I am a trader and marketer." - Maina Kageni
Maina Kageni is not only the King of Radio in Kenya, but also an astute business person.
Under his company Maina Kageni Limited, the Classic 105 Radio presenter is part of a local tourism initiative called Tembea Kenya Tujenge Kenya.
Speaking exclusively to Mpasho, Maina shared how the Covid-19 pandemic became the genesis of the tourism project that is doing well now.
"During Covid, we realised hotels were closing down...icons like Norfolk and Intercontinental shut down. So we thought...lets get Kenyans traveling because by the time foreigners come back a lot of jobs would have been lost," Maina shared.
"I remember the government project was at least to turn over 10,000 beds in year one. In September we were more than 36,000 beds...we got Kenyans travelling. Now we have seen more business in hotels for Kenyans."
Maina prides himself in being a local tourist, with some of his best destinations in Kenya being Ol Tukai lodge, Lamu, Eldoret, Malindi, Meru, Kitui,
"There are things happening even in Bungoma... there is a place several waterfalls come together. It is an amazing scenic place."
Maina dismissed the notion that touring places around Kenya requires one to have a lot of money.
He said there are affordable houses for tourists provided by KWS, and it is not mandatory for one to book an expensive hotel inside scenic places.
Other than the tourism agency, Maina runs other businesses including selling and marketing products.
"If you want a plane dashboard I can get you. I am a trader and marketer. I talk to brands...market them and advice them. I am not cheap..." he said.
