Actress Catherine Kamau is arguably one of the most sought-after social media influencers in Kenya.
Having built her brand through acting, Kate actress protects this brand when indulging in businesses with companies that want her to promote their products.
Speaking during the launch of Twiva, a social commerce platform, Kate said there are things she considers before signing a deal to promote a brand.
"I have to decide whether the brand matches mine, sometimes your brand can suffer just because it is a big company... you want to be seen working with them. But is it adding value to your brand? If it is, then am on board," Kate shared.
The mother of two said that she does not just jump on promoting a product without knowing how her fans will receive her endorsement.
"What I do, even before I start real influencing.. am on the ground engaging with my fans... they usually guide me into brands that I want to work with. My community guides me on the jobs that I want to take," she said.
Kate describes her social media community as her biggest asset that she has to safeguard.
Therefore, she has to balance between the business needs of a company and the needs of her community.
"It is so challenging.. sometimes the money is good you want to post every day. But I appreciate that I built the community, and there is a reason why they are on my page.
I have to respect that, no matter how good the money is. Sometimes I have to say no so as not to exhaust my fans."
Kate advised fellow influencers to learn to say no when a company's needs does not match their personal brand.
