Homa Bay Sub County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) yesterday arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old KMTC student in Homa Bay town constituency.

Elly Odoyo Oyier, 37, was arrested yesterday evening in Homa Bay town for interrogations over the brutal murder of Emily Chepkemoi, a first-year clinical medicine student at KMTC Homa Bay town campus.

Confirming the incident to KNA, Sub County DCI Monica Berege revealed that the suspect who was the boyfriend of the deceased is likely to have leading information towards the heinous act.

Berege further reiterated that the suspect who is a businessman in Homa Bay town will be arraigned in court once they are through with their investigations.

The body of the deceased was found lying on her bed in a pool of blood in her rented house at Oriang’ Estate within the town on Sunday evening by one of her neighbours who became suspicious following a bad stench that was emanating from her house and alerted the police.

The deceased who was stabbed twice at the neck and the head with a knife was last seen at the campus on Friday evening after attending classes only to be found dead on that fateful day.

Consequently, her classmates led by KMTC Students’ Representative Council’s chairperson David Odhiambo are now appealing to the security agencies in the area to beef up security within the town and its environs.

Odhiambo stressed that the authorities should ensure that security in the area is maximized to avoid such incidents from occurring in future.

The body of the student is still lying at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
