They did it again and they deserved it! For the third year in a row, leading bookmakers SportPesa carried the day during Africa’s prestigious sports awards over the weekend. This happened at the Sandton Convention Centre in South Africa with SportPesa winning in all the categories that they were nominated.
These awards are the most prestigious commercial sports award scheme in the continent and winning the award is no mean feat. The awards are held to recognize and honour the very best activations, agencies, brands, campaigns, communications, events, governing bodies, innovations, platforms, programmes, rights holders and sponsorships.
The awards celebrate excellence in the sports industry, honoring the people and corporates behind the growth and success of various sports initiatives globally.
SportPesa took home the Best African Sponsorship Award for Everton in Tanzania besides beating DSTV’S SuperSport to clinch the top honour in the Best Pan African Campaign for the Everton in Tanzania tour in July 2017. It was Everton’s maiden tour of East Africa.
The win comes slightly over a year since SportPesa launched in Tanzania. The bookmaker’s partnership with English Premier League Club Everton sealed in May 2017 and the maiden trip by the club’s first team to Tanzania shortly after for a friendly match in Dar es Salaam, kicked off the company’s successful projects in the East African nation. The deal considered the most lucrative in Everton’s 140-year history commenced on June 1, 2017.
“The successful Everton in Tanzania trip is a perfect example of how far we can go when government works with the private sector to support sports. We are honoured to work closely with the government,” said SportPesa’s Chief Marketing Officer for Kenya and Tanzania Kelvin Twissa.
Twissa was accompanied to the SIA gala by Tanzania’s Ministry of Sports Permanent Secretary Susan Mlawi, SportPesa Tanzania Administration and Compliance Director Tarimba Abbas, SportPesa South Africa Marketing Manager Gail Odgers and Everton FC’s Head of Partnerships Management Mark Rollings. Gor Mahia’s Marketing Liaison Gerphas Okuku was also present at the event. Gor Mahia got a chance to play Everton during the UK club’s tour of Tanzania last year.
Since its debut at the SIA in 2016, SportPesa, which is barely five years old, has won five awards in total. Last year, the company won Best African Sponsorship Award for its support of the grassroots league Super 8 in partnership with Kenya’s Extreme Sports Limited.
SportPesa’s campaign ‘Made of Winners’ then won the gong in the Pan African Campaign of the Year category.
In 2016, SportPesa got the Best African Sponsorship Award for its partnership with the Kenyan Premier League. “This award would not have been possible without the massive support from our partner Everton and our customers. Thank you for believing in us,” Twissa said.
