Less than three weeks after Royal Media Services (RMS) sent of some its employees home, a Mombasa based media house has followed suit.

The future of some 40 Kenyans is in jeopardy after Radio Salaam stopped transmitting its signals on Friday, November 11, sending the employees on compulsory leave.

Reports indicate that the station owned by former Defense Minister Yusuf Hajji, has been struggling to make revenue since its inception and the situation got worse this year forcing it to relocate from the prestigious TSS Plaza in Mombasa's CBD to Baluchi Complex.

A communiqué from the management directed the technicians to switch off transmission lines citing routine maintenance as the reason for this move.

“We will be carrying out maintenance of our studios and transmitters for three days starting today (Friday Nov. 11th) at 5PM, therefore we will be off air for the entire period," the memo reads in part.

Members of staff were also instructed to go on temporary leave during for period which the station was undergoing maintenance.

After some days, they received another email informing them not to go to work until further notice, and that was when it dawned on them that their fate was sealed.

Many believe that the station is on the verge of closure because of the financial problems it is facing, this has been brought about by failure to meet monthly revenue targets.
