Kenyan activist and renowned writer Boniface Mwangi recently celebrated his daughter, Naila Mwangi, on her 14th birthday.

In his message celebrating this important day, Mwangi talked about how he shows love to his children every day, knowing that any day could be his last.

"Today is my daughter's birthday. Naila turns 14. I kiss my children every day, knowing it could be my last," Mwangi said, sharing a lovely photo of himself with Naila, where he came close to taking his own life due to the challenges he was facing.

In a lengthy post on X, Mwangi, who has been at the forefront of leading protests against President Ruto's government, explained how he found himself in a very dark place and considered suicide.

Mwangi revealed that he had even written his will and made final phone calls to some of his close contacts before attempting to take his own life.

"On August 3, 2024, I found myself in a very dark place and considered suicide. A few days earlier, I had signed my will and made calls or sent messages to a few people. It was my farewell. I wanted to die. To leave this world in peace," he said.

He explained that these thoughts were fueled by the pain, sorrow, and trauma he was experiencing due to the unrest and bloodshed involving protesting youth in the country.

"There was so much pain, sadness, and trauma in my life that I could no longer endure. I couldn't keep watching without help as our country was plunged into a severe crisis of government-sanctioned violence targeting innocent Kenyans," he revealed.

However, his thoughts of suicide did not come to fruition as his family reached out to support him, providing him with medical treatment and mental health counseling.
