Kenyan stand-up comedian Oliver Otieno, popularly known as YY, is in mourning following the death of his grandmother, Zilpa Ogolla.

YY took to social media to announce the sad news and express his gratitude for the profound impact his grandmother had on his life.

In his tribute, YY wrote: "Rest well, Dani (Mama Zilpa Ogolla)... You fought a very painful battle. Thank you for your influence on my education. Dani will be laid to rest on September 27, 2024, in Kosele village. Nind Gi kwe Min Dolly."

Fans and friends have flooded the comments section with messages of condolence. Notable messages include:

Jacky Avfril: “So sad, my condolences.”

Leacky Frankoo: “Sorry, may her soul rest in peace.”

Vicky Ayocki: “Roho yake ilale mahali pema.”

Lavender Mamake Whinslet: “Condolences to the family.”

Sheilah Orende: “My condolences to the family.”

Maureen Milanda: “May she rest in peace.”

Deborah Atieno: “I will never stop loving you, Min Dolly.”

In a previous interview, YY shared the challenges of his childhood, including an abusive father and the impact it had on his life.

He revealed that he grew up in a physically abusive environment, which significantly influenced his development.

“When I was in high school, I experienced a lot of physical abuse. This also influenced who I am today. I have never forgotten the abuse I went through, even though I have forgotten some of the good things,” he said, visibly emotional.

YY's father, an alcoholic who was abusive to both him and his mother, passed away when YY was in class three.

This tragedy forced his mother to move to the village, closing her business in the city and making life increasingly difficult for the family.

“I was raised in Nairobi for eight years until my dad passed away when I was in Standard 3. My dad used to beat my mum severely. I wanted to protect my mother, so I often intervened during those times,” YY reflected during the interview.
