Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi recently opened up about a dark period in his life when he considered taking his own life due to the relentless harassment he has faced for standing up against the government.

Mwangi, known for his bold activism and unwavering fight for social justice, shared his story on social media, revealing how close he came to ending his life.

He credited his family’s love and empathy for keeping him alive during his lowest moments.

In a candid post, Mwangi wrote, "On August 3, 2024, I found myself in a very dark place and considered taking my own life. A few days earlier, I had signed my will, then rang or texted a few people. It was my farewell. I wanted to die."

He explained that the immense pain, grief, and trauma he had endured left him feeling helpless, particularly as he watched Kenya spiral into state-sanctioned violence against innocent citizens.

Despite anticipating ridicule for sharing his experience, Mwangi emphasized the importance of telling his story.

"Although I wanted to commit suicide, my family and friends threw a ring of love and empathy around me that made me reconsider," he said, adding that they encouraged him to seek professional help and take a break to focus on his mental health.

This support, according to Mwangi, gave him a new lease on life.

The activist also touched on the ongoing political turmoil in Kenya, condemning the government's violent response to peaceful protests.

He criticized President William Ruto for labeling demonstrators as "treasonous" and deploying the military to quash the protests, resulting in numerous deaths and disappearances.

Mwangi accused the government of lying about the abductions, with over 60 Kenyans still missing since June 2024.

Mwangi's activism has not only endangered his life but also left his family traumatized. He revealed that his children live in constant fear of him being abducted or killed.

Despite the threats and arrests, Mwangi remains resolute, stating that he will not allow intimidation to control his life.

Reflecting on his career, Mwangi recalled witnessing atrocities during his time as a press photographer and activist.

The recent violence has reopened old wounds, but Mwangi said he was determined to continue fighting for a better Kenya, undeterred by the government's brutality.
