Former Presidential aspirant Mohamed Abduba Dida

The family of Presidential aspirant Mohammed Abduba Dida has termed his 7-year jail term as harsh.

Dida allegedly traveled to the US in 2019 to further his education when he met his American wife and married her.

She later got a restraining order against Dida, and his family claimed that he unknowingly violated it by visiting a mosque that was within the area he had been restricted from.

“He went to a nearby mosque to pray, and unfortunately, it was in an area he was not supposed to be as she also frequented the mosque.”

His family added they hoped the government would intervene and help him get released.

"We are praying for him and trying to find a way of visiting him, finding another lawyer, and helping him. As a family, there are limits to what we can do, and that’s why we need government intervention.”

Dida was sentenced in November 2022 for stalking and intimidating an unidentified person in McLean County, Illinois.

During the trial, Dida faced two charges: stalking and transmitting threats, and aggravated stalking with a violation of a restraining order.

He received a 2-year sentence for the first offense and a 7-year sentence for the second.

The former teacher and presidential candidate, who gained national attention in 2013 when he ran against Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has been incarcerated at the Big Muddy River Correctional Center since November 2022.

He is scheduled for release on April 3, 2029.
