The Uganda Police Force on Tuesday evening cast doubt on allegations that veteran musician and opposition politician Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, had been shot.

Bobi Wine's aide, Najja Ssenyonj, earlier on Tuesday evening claimed that the Ugandan opposition leader was injured in the leg during an altercation with a uniformed police officer.

However, in a statement released to the public, the Uganda Police Force disputed these claims, suggesting that the former singer was injured after stumbling while getting into his vehicle.

This account was provided by officers present during the scuffle between Bobi Wine and the police.

"Today, September 3, 2024, Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert was invited by Mr. George Musisi (Lawyer) to a thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District. Hon. Kyagulanyi attended the ceremony, which concluded peacefully," the Uganda Police statement read.

"Upon leaving the venue, Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team disembarked from their vehicles and began a procession towards Bulindo town; however, the police advised against it.

Despite their guidance, he insisted on proceeding, blocking the road, leading the police to intervene to stop the procession. During the ensuing altercation, it is claimed he sustained injuries.

The police officers at the scene claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, while Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team allege that he was shot," the statement continued.

The police department stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the truth behind the conflicting claims made by both parties.

"He was taken to Najaeem Medical Center in Bulindo for first aid. The police will investigate the shooting allegations and any related incidents," the police said.

The police statement contradicted the account from Bobi Wine's aide, who claimed that the opposition leader was injured in the leg during a confrontation with a uniformed police officer and was taken to Nsambya Hospital in the capital, Kampala, for treatment.
