Kenyan singer Charisma has revealed he battled depression in 2020 adding he tried taking his life.
Speaking on the Mic Cheque podcast, Charisma revealed going solo after breaking from the group Le Band.
He says going solo brought challenges he had not anticipated
What was the most challenging thing you have been through?
Charisma responded
"I used to be in a group.
I left and the first time I left I thought it would be the same (being paid as a group) only to realize no one gave a FCUK about me as a solo artist.
I was starting from zero, it was a difficult time for me because I wasn't making money.
My 5-year relationship ended during that time.
I went through depression and had to be hospitalized severally, 2020 is a year where I went through the worst period of my life."
Charisma says being raised in an African setup did not make it easy for him to speak out.
"I was raised in a household where you are told to 'man up'
It taught me a lot of things about mental health before that I wasn't empathetic to people battling. mental health
I tried to take my life a couple of times, but here we are now."
