The Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) and Rescue.co (Rescue.co) have extended their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the innovative Mamalink initiative to run throughout 2024 and 2025.

Mamalink is a public-private partnership that provides free emergency medical services to mothers and neonates across Nairobi County, ensuring that every mother and newborn receives timely, quality care.

This MOU highlights the County's commitment to enhancing maternal and newborn health outcomes, emphasizing the vital role that emergency and referral services play in achieving these objectives.

Furthermore, NCCG and rescue.co will collaborate on research initiatives, long-term financing strategies, and resource mobilisation efforts to ensure the sustainability and continued growth of emergency services in the County to reach even more Nairobians.

Since its launch in May 2023, the Mamalink initiative has effectively improved maternal and neonatal health in the county.

Working with the county's Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Rescue.co leverages technology to provide real-time, faster emergency referrals for mothers and neonates. This ensures efficient coordination across referral pathways, leading to improved health outcomes.

To date, it has provided timely emergency care to over 8,800 mothers and newborns, with an average response time of just 14 minutes. This partnership has extended the county's coverage to over 550 emergency cases per month.

Mamalink's success can be credited to the integration of 40+ private and NGO ambulances onto a central technology platform (Flare, which is owned and operated by rescue.co), a central emergency hotline and 24/7 medical dispatch operations by rescue.co and the training of more than 200 healthcare professionals, which has improved service quality and created hundreds of jobs in the community.

Suzanne Silantoi, Nairobi County’s CECM for Health, Wellness, and Nutrition said, “The success of Mamalink demonstrates the power of innovative ventures between Nairobi County and rescue.co. Through the delivery of emergency services, we are ensuring that every mother and newborn in Nairobi has access to the care they need.

This is line with Governor Sakaja’s vision to transform the health sector and give the people of Nairobi dignified medical services.”

Vicky Kaigai, Head of Government Relations at rescue.co-added, “The renewed MOU signifies a deeper collaboration between Nairobi City County Government and Rescue.co. We are committed to supporting Nairobi and other counties as they enhance their emergency services capabilities, ensuring that critical services are accessible to all mothers and neonates and ultimately all Kenyans.”

Mama Link remains committed to reducing mortality rates, enhancing health outcomes, and driving progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ultimately saving the lives of mothers and newborns.
