Nairobi residents will now have to part with a certain amount of money to own a pet in their homes

This follows proposed charges that Nairobi County has unveiled in its latest revenue-boosting bid.

Nairobi City County is charged with the responsibility of providing a variety of services to residents within its area of jurisdiction.

The proposed charges for mandatory licensing costs will affect Nairobi residents who own pets and other animals.

In charges seen by Mpasho, it will cost you Sh200 per cat, according to the Nairobi City County Animal Control and Welfare Bill 2024, which has been introduced in the Nairobi City County Assembly to address various aspects of animal care, control, and welfare, to foster a harmonious relationship between residents and animals.

The bill is pending approval by Governor Johnson Sakaja and is scheduled for public participation on August 2.

This would be in addition to the Nairobi County Dog Control and Welfare Act, 2015, which outlined measures that residents have to adhere to for their pets.

A gazette notice, on 22nd April 2016, provided for the for the control and welfare of dogs within the precincts of Nairobi County pursuant to part II of the fourth schedule to the Constitution.
