Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura has said that the staff of former President Uhuru Kenyatta are on the payroll.

Mwaura said that Uhuru is entitled to 34 staff who must be public servants, 33 who are in office.

He, however, said that two of Uhuru's staff are yet to earn salaries.

The Spokesman alleged that Uhuru has not forwarded the names of his spokesperson Kanze Dena and another staff to the State House Comptroller for processing.

This comes after allegations that the staff have not been paid for two years.

"The Office of the former President confirms that their staff are on the government payroll. The Presidential Retirement Benefits Act specifies that a former President should have 34 staff. Already, 33 are in office. The Act also specifies that staff who work in the Office of the Retired President must be public servants," Mwaura said in a statement.

"On Kanze Dena and one more staff in Uhuru's office their names have not been forwarded to the State House Comptroller by the retired President for processing."

Earlier, Kanze Dena said she was not able to compound in totality how much money they have not been paid.

On the choice of Uhuru's office, Mwaura said that in 2012 and 2013 the government purchased an office of the retired President located in Nyari, Nairobi.

The office was used by the late President Mwai Kibaki for nine years, between 2013 and 2022.

According to Mwaura, the office is suitable for any retired President.

"By rejecting this office and preferring that the government leases his own private home, the Third Retired President is inviting the government to violate procurement laws, regulations and procedures," Mwaura added.

On Monday, Dena said that Uhuru had not been provided with a fully furnished and well-maintained office.

Dena said the State House made it clear that the office in Nyari should be the one Uhuru should occupy.

“The statement that the retired President enjoys a fully furnished and maintained office is incorrect. To date, the matter has never been resolved,” she said.

She said the late President Mwai Kibaki picked the office in Nyari, as suitable for himself and as such, Uhuru was also entitled to choose an office that would be suitable for him.
