A death certificate doing rounds bearing the name and image of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is fake.

The former governor took to his X platform on Tuesday to clarify that the allegations of having faked his death to escape prison were a smear campaign against him.

Sonko faulted his opponents for running the campaigns saying the claims emerged after he clinched the Makadara MP seat.

"Politics is indeed a dirty game!! Faking a death certificate while I am still alive!! All these were mere propaganda, smear campaigns, and diversionary tactics aimed at tarnishing my reputation.

"These tactics began immediately after I won the Makadara by-election in 2011, with the aim of triggering another by-election," Sonko said on X.

He noted that while he has previously addressed the matter, his detractors have continued to use the same propaganda to make him look bad.

Sonko explained that the matter was settled by the courts in an Appeal he filed in 2001.

Through the Appeal, he was set free on the offence of escaping from prison.

"I was taken to Kibra Court the same year, and all accusations were proven to be mere propaganda.

"The only evidence presented in the escape case was successfully appealed in the High Court's Misc. Appeal case number 80 of 2001, leading to my release from prison."
