The title 'Zakayo' carries significant cultural and biblical symbolism, drawing parallels to the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector whose encounter with Jesus transformed his life.

Zacchaeus's well-known story has made some perceive Ruto as a modern-day Zakayo and derisively attach that nickname to him.

In February 2024, during a visit to Tokyo, President Ruto addressed the nickname, stating that he doesn't mind being called 'Zakayo'.

Ruto stressed that his decisions are guided by ensuring Kenya's prosperity and fiscal responsibility, asserting that the country's development should rely on its resources rather than external assistance or accruing debt.

"I don't mind being called names like 'Zakayo' because when you're doing the right thing, your conscience is clear. I will continue to prioritize the nation's interests regardless of the labels, including 'Zakayo'," Ruto affirmed.

In July 2023, speaking at an event in Murang'a County, Ruto shrugged off the 'Zakayo' moniker, affirming his dedication to improving the lives of Kenyans and bolstering revenue for national operations.
