Tributes from families of 11 KU students who perished in a road accident

• The memorial service was held on Sunday March 24 at Kenyatta University grounds.

• They were third-year students.

Family and friends who attended an interdenominational memorial service for the 11 students who died on March 18 described the hard times facing them as they came to terms with the death of the students.

Kenyatta University on Sunday, March 24 hosted a service at the Graduation Square and First Lady Rachel Ruto was among the attendees.

Family members stood in front of tables with photos of their loved ones and lit candles.

The families also attended a postmortem examination exercise at Kenyatta University Funeral Home where they appealed to the government to help them foot the funeral bills.

The results of the postmortem revealed that all the victims died as a result of severe head injuries.

At the funeral home, a mother comforted by relatives told Citizen TV of the last conversation with her son.

Most of the victims were third and fourth-year students.

Catherine Rotich, a mother lost her firstborn son Rogers Kiprotich, and the pain of his absence.

"Mara ya mwisho tukuongea na yeye. Alikuwa tu ni mtoto kila mtu alipenda, "She described him as a very social man, who was also very calm.

Another mother of student Neville Opiyo Omondi who was pursuing a Public Health course. He loved going to church and told his sister to Citizen.

22-year-old Austin Owino, a third-year student, was hailed as social and friendly and embraced each experience.

21-year-old John Mureithi, a third-year Health Sciences student loved photography. The family members described him as dependable.

"He is one of the jovial sons that we have. Somebody who surely open a good person whom you can discuss with everything without thinking of his age" a relative shared.

The list of those who lost their lives was made public by the university management.

They are Navile Omondi Opiyo, Beneas Otieno, Hellen Mbula Kisilu, Michael Muteti, Vallary Akinyi Ouma, and Oslo Mwendwa.

Others are Felix Gori Nyaata, Austine Omondi Owino, Rodger Kiprotich Rono, John Mbiriri Mureithi, and Patricia Murugi Mwangi.
