Several people are feared dead and others injured after a huge gas explosion was reported in Embakasai, Nairobi.

The explosion that ignited a huge fire is said to have originated from a gas filling station in the area.

Videos shared online capture the inferno razing down property of unknown value as firefighters from Nairobi County try to put it off.

Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura said the explosion occurred at a gas filling company near Kabansora in Embakasi, Nairobi, minutes to Friday midnight.

"The company was refilling gas cylinders when the fire broke out and several people were injured and rushed to hospital," Mwaura said.

"The building hosting the company is badly damaged. The cause of the fire remains unknown."

Mwaura encouraged the public to avoid the area while rescue operations are underway.

The Nairobi County Fire Brigade, the National Police Service, the Kenya Red Cross, and E-Plus Ambulances Kenya are leading the effort to put out the fire.

In an update on its Twitter handle, the Kenya Red Cross claimed that 100 households have been evicted.

. The fire is claimed to have spread to some adjoining homes, causing residents to flee for safety.

Those injured in the fire were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, Mama Lucy Hospital, and Komarock Medical Centre for treatment.
