2023 has been a remarkable year for many Kenyans across the economic, social and political divide.

Many records have been broken by individuals from sportsmen, to businessmen, chefs among others. Here is our list for 2023

1. Faith Kipyegon

The middle-distance runner has probably had the biggest year in Kenyan record-breaking awards.

The 29-year-old is a three-time world record holder. She also walked away with the World Track Athlete of the Year award.  She told of her joy being recognized by the athlete community in 2023.

"A beautiful closure of an amazing year for me and a Happy 60th Independence day for my lovely country Kenya. I am honored that my performances on the track have been recognized by the athletics community."

She set the world record in the 1500m, mile, and 5000m + winning gold in the 1500m and 5000m at the World Championships.

2. Kelvin Kiptum

Kelvin Kiptum also won praise for running 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon in October, breaking the 2:01 barrier and effectively taking 34 seconds off Eliud Kipchoge’s previous world record.

He also recorded the fastest time winning the London Marathon in April in 2:01:25.

He won the World Athlete of the Year: Out of Stadia Events.

3. Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Faith Cherotich got the World Athlete Rising Star of the Year awards.

4. Chef Maliha Mohamed

Chef Maliha Mohamed smashed the World Record in August for the longest home kitchen cooking record 90 hours 15min. (NB: This record was never ratified by the Guinness World Book Records)

Maliha surpassed the previous record held by American chef Rickey Lumpkin of California, who achieved a home cooking time of 68 hours, 30 minutes, and 1 second in December 2018.

Maliha would later attempt to break the record for the longest solo cooking session in November 2023.

Maliha claimed the longest cooking marathon (individual) award after clocking 150 hours, 11 seconds, breaking the previous record of 119 hours 57 minutes, 16 seconds set by Irishman Alan Fisher on November 7, 2023.

(NB: This record has still not been ratified by Guinness World Book Records)

5. Peres Jepchirchir

The professional long-distance runner won gold at the Road Running Championship in Riga, Latvia in October.

She's only the 4th woman in history to win 3 half-marathon gold medals.

6. Beatrice Chebet

Beatrice Chebet clocked 8:24.05 in the 3000m to become the fastest woman in the world this year.

Beatrice became the first woman in history to win the 5km at the World Running Championships earlier this year in 14 mins 35 secs.
