The Kenya National Theatre will remain closed for the next six months to allow renovation of the facility into a modern structure.

In an update from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports under CS Ababu Namwamba, KNT has received a renovation donation of Sh167 million.

“CS Ababu Namwamba was a witness to a contract handover to the bid winner for the renovation of the Kenya National Theatre (KNT) in Nairobi. The ministry is investing Sh67 million to renovate the theatre,” the Ministry of Youth Affairs said.

While launching the renovation contract, CS Namwamba also unveiled the newly formed KNT board consisting of 12 members who will spearhead the facelift of the facility.

The 12 members of the new board will serve for a period of 2 years.

The CS, who was hosted by KNT Board chair Capt. Kungu Muigai alongside CEO Michael Pundo, said that the renovation will see the theatre transformed into a modern facility that supports multiple talent development and nurturing.

Creatives in Nairobi have been urged to utilize other available spaces within the city for their rehearsals and performances.

“KNT will remain closed for the period of renovation, and we are urging theatre enthusiasts, thespians, and film producers to utilise other spaces such as Ukumbi mdogo, Cheche gallery and Wasanii corner for their practice and performances,” KNT CEO Michael Pundo noted.

The facility is expected to reopen for the public as of April 2024.
