Tony Forbes, father to late South African rapper Kiernan Forbes popularly known as AKA has said his family is getting better at dealing with the fact that his son is no more.

AKA was shot dead in February this year outside a restaurant in Durban this year. Speaking to eNCA, AKA's father said after seven months, he and the family are carrying on with life.

"For me personally, at this point, I feel the gap, the hole of him not being with us even more, As a family we continue to struggle to come to terms with what's happened. We hear his voice every day. It's something to be grateful for to hear him."

He added that not all days are the same.

"Some days are tough, some are better, and I anticipate this roller coaster will persist for some time. It's not solely about losing a child, it's also about the circumstances surrounding it and the enduring emotional impact. The tears are always near the surface, and anything can set off a wave of emotions."

AKA was killed outside alongside his long-time friend, Tebello Tibz Motsoane on February 10th. Hours after his death, his parents Tony and Lynn Forbes confirmed the death of their son in a statement.

"It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from the Durban Police."

They went on to describe their son as one who shared love.

"To us. Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, was a son, brother. grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kairo. To many, he was AKA, SUPAMEGA, BHOVA, and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and he gave love in return."

The family further asked for space during that time.

"In this time of grief, we appeal for your compassion, space, and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days. We thank you for the love and support we have received thus far, and ask you continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord."

Kiernan Forbes was laid to rest about a week after his death at a private burial ceremony at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.
